How this calculator works
Like our other paycheck calculators, this estimates federal tax and FICA the same way regardless of state. On top of that, it computes Virginia state income tax using Virginia’s own standard deduction, personal exemption, and four-bracket schedule. Virginia has no local income tax layer, so unlike our New York calculator there’s no city or county toggle to worry about.
The formula
(federal tax, FICA, and net-pay assembly are identical to the Texas calculator)
vaTaxableIncome = max(0, wagesAfterPretax − vaStandardDeduction − vaPersonalExemption)
vaStateTax = 2026 Virginia bracket schedule applied to vaTaxableIncome
= 2% up to $3,000, 3% from $3,001-$5,000,
5% from $5,001-$17,000, 5.75% above $17,000
stateTax = vaStateTax
Worked example
A single filer earning $60,000/year, paid biweekly, with no 401(k) or extra deductions:
- FICA: $4,590.00/year (same as any state)
- Federal tax: $5,020.00/year (same as any state)
- Taxable income: $60,000 − $8,750 standard deduction − $930 personal exemption = $50,320
- Virginia state tax: $720 + 5.75% × ($50,320 − $17,000) = $720 + 5.75% × $33,320 = $2,635.90/year
- Net pay: $60,000 − $4,590 − $5,020 − $2,635.90 = $47,754.10/year, or $1,836.70 per biweekly paycheck
We cross-checked this against SmartAsset’s Virginia Paycheck Calculator for the same salary and frequency (accessed 2026-08-23, zip code 20101): it showed a Virginia state tax of $101/paycheck ($2,626/year) and a net paycheck of $1,835, both within about $10 to $45 a year of our figures. The small gap comes from the same annual-liability-vs-per-paycheck-withholding difference described on our Texas calculator.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What are Virginia's 2026 state income tax brackets?
Virginia has four brackets: 2% on the first $3,000 of taxable income, 3% from $3,001 to $5,000, 5% from $5,001 to $17,000, and 5.75% on everything above $17,000. These brackets have not changed since 2004, and the top rate applies to most working Virginians for at least part of their income.
Does Virginia have local or city income taxes?
No. Virginia has no local or municipal income tax anywhere in the state. Cities and counties fund most of their budgets with property tax instead, along with smaller local taxes like business license and restaurant taxes. This is unlike New York or Pennsylvania, where many cities add their own income tax.
Does my filing status change Virginia's tax brackets?
No. Unlike the federal brackets, Virginia uses the same $3,000/$5,000/$17,000 thresholds whether you file single or jointly. Married couples do have the option to elect a Spouse Tax Adjustment on their return, which can split combined income across two brackets for a modest savings, but this calculator does not model that optional election.
What is Virginia's standard deduction for 2026?
The standard deduction is $8,750 for single filers and $17,500 for married couples filing jointly for tax year 2026. Virginia also allows a $930 personal exemption per filer, which this calculator applies on top of the standard deduction before computing tax.
Does Virginia have a state disability or paid family leave payroll tax?
Not yet. Virginia enacted a new statewide Paid Family and Medical Leave program in 2026, but payroll contributions don't begin until April 1, 2028. For tax year 2026, there is no such deduction from Virginia paychecks, so this calculator doesn't include one.
Why doesn't my calculated net pay match what shows up in my actual paycheck?
This calculator estimates your annual tax liability and divides it evenly across your pay periods. Your actual employer withholds tax per paycheck using IRS and Virginia withholding tables, which round and estimate slightly differently. The two methods land close together but rarely to the exact cent.
